Retirement Planning

Rollover IRAs

A rollover IRA account receives a distribution from a qualified retirement plan that's typically moved directly from the plan—with funds made payable to the rollover institution. Rolling over a lump-sum distribution maintains the tax-deferred status of retirement savings dollars.

Advantages
  • You owe no immediate income taxes on the distribution
  • You can avoid early IRS withdrawal penalties if you're under age 59½
  • The earnings on your assets grow tax-deferred
  • You decide where to invest your money as permitted by a Rollover IRA
  • Certain distributions before age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS early-withdrawal penalty, but you may be able to access the money in your Rollover IRA without IRS penalty…if you set up a periodic payment program (sometimes called "72(t) payments")
Disadvantages You may not be able to roll over your entire distribution. Your employer should give you a statement that indicates whether any part of your distribution cannot be rolled over

An AllianceBernstein Roth IRA Provides:

  • Flexibility in choosing from a wide array of AllianceBernstein mutual funds, from fixed income to equity as well as Wealth Strategies asset-allocation funds and Retirement Strategies target-date funds.
  • Access to account and fund information online and on the phone.
  • Customer service representatives that are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. EST.

It's best to fully understand all of the options before making this decision. Download Rollover IRA—A Guide to Retirement Plan Distributions for a detailed look at the advantages, disadvantages and tax consequences of each option.
